It may seem like a breeze at first glance to cut a piece of fabric and upholster the seat of an open armed side chair. Ohhhhhhh, don’t be fooled. It takes a little practice to get those angled cuts just right so that you don’t end up skimpy on the back side. The fabric should lie flat and smooth around the arms and back posts. It becomes even more important to know some tips when the back of the seat is curved and you’ve spent some good $$$ on your fabric.
I was fortunate to attend The Upholstery Fair in July where I got to ask this old time upholsterer exactly how to approach the ‘post cutting’ dilemma I always feel. To indulge my annoying questions, Bob Gantz decided to throw an extra piece of fabric on top of an upholstered chair just to show us exactly how to make the cuts.
To break up the workshop, these photos show you how to make the cuts for the front posts. Tomorrow I’ll show you how he made the cuts for the back posts. Enjoy and be inspired.
See you tomorrow.
