The US got its first glimpse of neon in 1923 when Earle Anthony purchased two neon signs for his LA based Packard car dealership. He bought them from Mr. NEON himself, George Claude. Claude’s French company, Claude Neon had been working on a neon lighting tube and had received the patent in 1915. As far as the 100 years of neon, it’s ok, we’re almost there.
Neon lighting opened up the world of signage. The fact that the light can be seen in day and night was an instant sensation.
Since then, neon paint, neon fashion, and neon home accessories have come and gone, but they’re back again. There will always be neon haters, those who probably hate neon in its overdone state, but I think if it’s done with extreme restraint, in a room of neutrals, it can add a look of edgy sophistication. One throw pillow, one piece of art, one single vase, or one mirror frame is all you need to electrify a room of subdued neutrals. In fact, eyes falling on a slight neon interruption, will be delighted with the break in a monochromatic color scheme.
Since seeing all these little neon fashion accessories, I’m itchin’ to create my own dab of neon something. Unfortunately, the timing isn’t good. I’m headed to California for a week, when I get back, I go full throttle into a 3 Day Upholstery Bootcamp and then new classes begin. Drat! I’m not going to be able to get my creativity on for a few weeks.
(Isn’t this when ‘one’ realizes they need to set aside one day a week for creating?)
Just to see if I can live with the intensity of neon, however so slight, the fabulous Emma Reidy (designer deluxe) has come up with a studio bathroom design which will incorporate some sizzling hot pink in extreme moderation. Emma is a new designer in Indianapolis and she and I are hitting it off famously.
I simply had to call for help. I was drawing a blank.
Once I showed Emma my studio bathroom, industrial pipes, high ceiling, concrete walls and all, her creative juices went into overdrive. She’s my kind of girl because she’s also got a thing for fabric. You’ll see the AFTER when it’s done. Meanwhile, I’ll get a BEFORE photo taken.
Until then, take a look at how well neon plays with others in a variety of home spaces.
Neon paint is easy, neon upholstery fabric is impossible to find.
