DIY Beginning Upholstery I

We will start from the very beginning. Once you choose an appropriate piece of furniture for a beginner, you will learn how to determine fabric yardage, choose appropriate fabric, tear it down (remove the old upholstery fabric), make simple repairs, re-pad and reupholster it. Professional tips and shortcuts will be covered in order to keep you interested and excited about learning how to upholster. You will learn how to use upholsterer’s tools as well as how to substitute tools you may already have at home. This class meets 6 times for 2 ½ hours each week.

DIY Beginning Upholstery II

This will be a continuation of Beginning Upholstery. You will be practicing the skills learned in Beginning Upholstery as well as gaining creative confidence to re-style or repurpose a piece of upholstered furniture. Again, it’s much better to choose a piece that’s simple, yet includes just enough detail to give your already growing skills a little challenge. The goal is to finish it in six sessions, not get tired of working on it and still be excited to be learning how to reupholster existing furniture. This class meets 6 times for 2 ½ hours each week.

Student’s Choice

Our popular Beginning Upholstery is expanded here to accommodate an upholstery or home sewing project of your choice. Examples would be an ottoman, sofa cushions, turning an old coffee table into an upholstered bench, upholstering a headboard, making throw pillows, recovering counter stools, a vanity stool, making a window seat cushion, etc. This class meets 6 times for 2 ½ hours each week.

Intermediate DIY Upholstery

DIY Intermediate Upholstery. This class is designed for those of you who already have experience upholstering. We will still be working on fairly small pieces but they will involve more finesse and details such as button tufting, pleating, applying decorative nailheads, double welt cording, other decorative details or upholstery techniques borrowed from dressmaker details. This class meets 6 times for 2 ½ hours each week.

Beginning Sewing and Pro Pillow Workshop

These pillow workshops fill very quickly. You will learn how to operate a sewing machine and make professional, custom throw pillows in two, 2 ½ hour workshops. I will provide all the instruction and tools necessary to make simple, knife edged pillows, pillows with zippers installed in the seam and/or corded pillows with zippers installed in the seam. Beautiful textiles, quilted fabrics, repurposed wools—anything goes. After this workshop, you will be designing custom pillows worthy of any SoHo boutique
