I was thrilled to be asked to contribute a DIY project to Design Sponge. One of my favorite things to design, build and upholster is my salvaged spool ottoman. The possibilities are endless.

Most anyone who reads my blog probably ended up here via Design Sponge, but I needed a post for this morning and I needed to get this tutorial in my archives. So, click on over to last week’s DIY project on DS to see more instructions and photos of the plaid ottoman project. Sounds like a secret mission.

The ugly teardown is a small price to pay for the satisfaction of reupholstering your vintage chair. Knowing this skill allows you the flexibility to change things up from time to time for only the cost of new fabric. If you have patience, determination and some basic tools, you might want to try this on a basic bench or side chair.

As I was saying, once you get your ugly ‘before’ chair torn down, the fun part begins. A traditional plaid by Ralph Lauren was the new fabric choice for this little boy’s room. The perfect fabric- timeless and trendy. Add a little punch with a colorful, all american continent pillow.

The hardest part of this chair was lining up the plaids starting with the front apron, the cushion boxing, cushion top and bottom and then the inside back.
